TOKYO – Mitsui O.S.K. Lines, Ltd. (MOL; President: Kunio Suzuki) today announced the opening of a Chongqing representative office, following approval from the Chinese government. The new office has started operations with PR activities, information gathering, and other liaison activities related to MOL services.
MOL established a three-year plan for its new China strategy, which began this year. The plan focuses on aggressive expansion of its business in anticipation of new opportunities resulting from China joining the World Trade Organization (WTO), which is expected to promote further growth in trade. The Chongqing office will help expand and enhance MOL’s network, a part of key issues in the first year of the company’s China strategy. It was the fifth office opened in 2003, following Zhongshan, Suzhou, Xian, and Lianyungang representative offices opened, MOL initially planned to open the Chongqing office in early 2004, but preparations were completed earlier than anticipated, so it was opened ahead of schedule.
Chongqing is one of the world largest cities with population of 32 million and has emerged as an important center of China’s automotive industry in recent years. Through the new representative office, MOL will work aggressively to offer fine-tuned, on-site service.
During 2003, MOL’s representative office also upgraded to MOL(China)’s branch offices in Qingdao, Guangzhou, Xiamen, and Ningbo with the above five new representative offices, bringing the total number of offices in Mainland China to 19. The company will continue to aggressively expand its network and provide higher levels of service in the next year.
